WHAT IS GRP (GLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC)?

GRP, also known as Fibreglass, a popular roofing system sold by The flat roof store in Huddersfield.

GRP, also known as Fibreglass, stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic. A completely watertight roofing system in which strand mat glass fibres are combined with a polyester resin over a timber deck, the overlayed with a UV-resistant Topcoat to form a seamless watertight shell.

Leaving no joints or laps, usually the weak points of other roofing system alternatives, GRP is commended for it’s seamless finish not only for it’s structural integrity but also seen as more aesthetic.

GRP is recommended for roofs with high levels of foot traffic such as balconies and terraces and for roofs with more complex shapes with pipes as the substance can be easily moulded around any pipes etc. The installation process involves:

1. A new timber deck (usually OSB Boards) is laid down.

2. A polyester Resin combined with a chopped strand glass matting is applied to the deck

3. A roller is used to remove any bubbles and flatten the matting

4. Once cured, the roof is overlaid with a UV-Resistant Topcoat.

What are the benefits of GRP flat roofing?

Seamless

Unlike other roofing systems, GRP roofing is joint free, as the top layer is formed by a resin. Often seen as a more aesthetically pleasing option and eliminates the most common point of failure with sheet membrane roofing.

Idea for smaller high traffic areas

If installed properly GRP can be an ideal roofing system for high foot traffic areas such as balconies.

Long Lasting

Under normal weather conditions and minimal maintenance, a standard GRP roof can be expected to last 20 – 30 years, depending on the systems installed. This is much longer than traditional roofing systems such as torch on felt.

Versatility

A more malleable roofing system as it is built up from a strand matt and Resin, it can be suited to more complex roofs, in which the roof system needs to be moulded around a skylight or pipe.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Is GRP waterproof without a topcoat?

Only temporarily, a topcoat is required to seal the fibres and prevent any water absorbtion

Is GRP roofing eco-friendly?

Having a longer lifespan than traditional roofing systems such as felt, it cuts down on material waste overtime & as a naturally insulating form of roofing, helps maintain temperatures, lowering heating usage.

Is GRP roofing easy to maintain?

GRP roofing is easy to maintain and requires minimal maintenance. Like all roofing systems, it is recommended to inspect your roof at least twice a year, focusing on draining and edges, checking for proper drainage and no cracks, punctures or pooling water/ If you want to increase the logevity of your roof it is recommended to apply a new topcoat every 15 to 20 yers to restore UV protection.

Is GRP the same as Fibreglass?

Yes, GRP stands for Glass reinforced plastic, also known as fibreglass.

How long does a GRP roof last?

If well installed a GRP roof can last up to 20 - 30 years. If well maintained and a new topcoat layer applied every 15 - 20 years, your GRP roofs lifespan can be stretched up to 50 years.
